The BID funded LBHF CCTV officer is the eyes and ears of the Hammersmith SafetyNet radio community. CCTV assists businesses to manage risks effectively through the sharing of information over the airwaves and by working in partnership with the local police to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Together, they make the town centre a safer environment in which to work, visit, socialise and invest in.

Good examples of team work in action over the past few months include:

Counter Terrorism

Three suspicious vehicles were identified next to one of our large corporate buildings during CCTV scanning for unusual activity and counter terrorism related potential hostile reconnaissance. By working in partnership with the business security teams on the ground, the status of the vehicles and occupants were quickly investigated and the risks thoroughly addressed. Although the incident was deemed non-suspicious, this event demonstrated the professionalism and effectiveness of the BID funded CCTV operator when dealing with high risk security situations and also provided a useful learning opportunity to all involved in the dynamic management of unknown threats.

Violent Shoplifter

Another direct result of CCTV vigilance identified a violent struggle between security at New Look, King St and a suspect who had been detained outside the store. As the guard was unable to request assistance via his SafetyNet radio, CCTV co-ordinated the emergency response by requesting police assistance and patching the live CCTV link through to the Met Police command and control centre enabling them to view the incident in real time. The BID CCTV operator continued to broadcast updates of the incident via the radio to the officers on route and provided valuable reassurance to the guard that help was on the way. The quick responses by all involved prevented further injury to the security guard and led to the arrest of the suspect for shoplifting.

Wanted Offender

Following an alert over the radio network that a male wanted by police for the offence of street robbery had been recently seen in the BID area, our CCTV operator began an extensive search across the town centre and surrounding streets for the outstanding suspect. Despite the initial difficulties of locating the individual amongst the high volume of pedestrians, persistence and further clarification of his description led to a positive identification. The suspects movements were closely tracked and officers were tactically guided in to make a successful arrest.

Public Safety

Proactive monitoring of King Street identified two females fighting in a secluded side street. Police were immediately alerted by the BID CCTV operator who also kept them updated with developments of the incident as they made their way to the location. Upon police arrival, one of the suspects attempted to run off prior to being detained, they were then arrested following a struggle. The quality of the CCTV footage has since played a significant part in the prosecution’s evidence.
